Breakfast Drinks

If you need a drink and all you can eat waffles, before work, on a weekday. Check out Pike Place Bar & Grill.

Crumbyum celebrated his 30th Birthday this week and I took him to breakfast. He wanted a cocktail so called around to a couple places and found out that PPB&G starts serving at 8am. Perfect. To go w/ his double gin & tonic (just like the good ol' days at the airport PPB&G offers the double-for-a-dollar treatment) Crumb ordered the pecan Belgium waffles--then came the insider information. Although not noted on the menu, Belgium waffles are all you can eat!! The waffles were good too.

I had poached eggs and rye toast. Eggs were over done--which happens w/ their Benedict a lot. Usually I ask to make sure the yolk is runny and then they seem to be fine.

Happy B-Day Crumbyum.

Crepe de France

I got a text from some friends Sunday a.m. with a craving for crepes. Specifically crepes at Crepe de France in the Pike Place Market. So 5 of us piled into the Frito Lay Malibu and headed to the Market. Now the crepe gods must have been shining on us as we found a parking place right in front of the ticket booth. We marched into Crepe de France and again the gods were looking out for us because in this tiny corner of the Market, space is limited. We were fortunate enough to be the only people in line to order and we procured a table that had seating for the 5 of us. Right on our heels were a dozen more hungry crepe fiends. I could feel their envy as we settled down with our coffee ($1.95..refills $.75) to wait for our crepes.

Four of us ordered the No. 7 Crepe Dujour ($9.95) with ham, mozzarella cheese, spinach, and mushrooms all wrapped up in a perfect crepe. I am a pretty big breakfast eater and this was plenty filling for me. It is served as soon as it is done so you get it hot and fresh. The saltiness of the ham and the flavor of the fresh spinach really complimented the sweetness of the thin crepe it was wrapped in. It was a hit with all of us who ordered it.

Bnopen ordered the Vegetarien Crepe ($9.95). I know "vegetarian" is spelled wrong, but that is their spelling. Inside this little bundle of goodness was cucumber, peppers, onion, mozzarella cheese, and tomatoes. She left nothing but the memory of this on her plate!

A visit here is not complete without one of their desert crepes ($8.45). They are plenty big enough to share between a couple of people.
This is strawberry with creme freche and loads of whip cream.

This is the chocolate and banana crepe. Again creme freche and lots of whip cream.

All in all this was a great start to a cool and cloudy Sunday morning.

Pike Place Bar and Grill

I swear I have written about this place but I cannot find the post! Anyway, a few of my close friends love the Pike Place Bar and Grill , it took me awhile but now I am also convinced it is a nice place to grab brunch. This isn't because their food is BOMB but it is your standard family restaurant complete with a full bar. The prices are decent and you get a nice view of Pike Place Market. For such a tourist location the place is never packed it can get crowded but you can usually grab a table in the bar. Speaking of full bar on my last visit we started with a few vodka grapefruit cocktails and for a "dollar more" we upgraded to a double. Perfect.

I tend to eat the Belltown Frittata on most visits which is hit or miss. Sometimes it is absolutely perfect and full of cheese. Other times it is kinda dry. Boo. The frittata is made of 3 eggs, fresh vegetables (usually peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms) and parmesan cheese baked to a golden brown and topped with sour cream. Served with home fries & a buttermilk biscuit. The home fries are great because they are plain and not covered in unidentifiable seasonings and undercooked. They are baked, salted and golden brown. I am not too impressed by the biscuit but it is a nice touch.

CarboOverload got down on the Wonder Bird which looked like a nice tasty turkey sandwich...
all white turkey, crisp bacon, cranberry sauce and swiss cheese on grilled sour dough bread. If she stops by Ketchup and Soup she can tell you how it really was.

You can enter on Pike or on First in the corner of the market.

"The Diner Evolved" : Steelhead Diner

After CrumbYum's post followed by CarboOverload's post last summer about Steelhead Diner I have been really interested in checkin it out.

The place is BOMB, but I also think it is overpriced. The diner booths surrounded by modern fishing art work and hand tied flies make for a comfortable environment. The booths are small and comfortable for two people so I couldn't imagine sitting in those booths with 4. Because we looked at the website and saw a reservation number earlier in the day we called to ensure we could get in quickly. Good call because the place was packed. Upon sitting down and looking around at our fellow diners I noticed average age was 45 and male.

Immediately we were served some fresh bread and the butter drizzled with pesto that Crumb commented on before. I am just here to confirm it was good. During the time we were tasting the butter we also noticed the great condiments offered on the table. Besides the crystal hot sauce which is quite good, you are also offered alder wood smoked sea salt, habanero garlic pepper and serrano infused white vinegar. I was more than impressed by these and actually considered figuring out how I could get my hands on these things to take home.

Our server was interesting and I felt like she either really loved her job and talking about the food or she was high. Regardless she was cool. She tried to push some specialty cocktails on us all of which ended up being 15 ingredients with a sugary rim. No thanks, we decided to get a few margaritas.
The menu is huge and I feel like they could benefit from cutting a few things off but dont ask me to pick what could go because it all looked great. We decided to start with the flash fried beechers cheese curds that came with a side of tartar sauce and hot mustard. I was thrown off by the tartar but I love tartar so its whatever. The cheese curds were hot and salty, damn i loved beechers cheese.

We also shared the Steelhead Diner House Salad which was described by L. as tasting just like a Whopper. It was a nice classic comfort food tasting salad complete with iceburg, bacon, egg and lorenzo dressing aka creamy french.

We decided to go with a few sandwiches and they were amazing. Both came with fries that were so perfectly cooked and salted that they did in fact remind me of this diner I frequented as a kid with my friend whos mom worked there. I went with the Buttermilk Fried Chicken sandwich. The chicken fry was light and crispy, not at all greasy and it had a nice underlying hint of heat. I also liked the coleslaw dressing that topped the sandwich and the crispy dill pickle.

L. went for the Roasted Pork Sandwich. I tasted the pork and it tasted just like how my mom use to cook pork in the crockpot. It was so soft and flavorful, I could have eaten a huge bowl of it. The pork carried a small hint of heat as well. Something tells me the chef here enjoys smoke and heat. I am not mad.

We were so full we couldnt even consider trying dessert but they had some nice looking options. We got two cups of coffee and just tried to let it all digest. I will certainly go back to try other menu items and maybe even sample their brunch menu. One word of advice is that if you are even in the business of paying $10+ for a sandwich make sure you are also prepared to pay $11 for a drink. Yikes.
