Taco Gringos

I have been thinking about tacos all summer, I think they have passed pizza on the chart of preferred dinner options over the past few months. After meeting up with L. who hadn't eaten dinner yet we walked right by Taco Gringos....and it was obvious this was going to have to do since it was 1am. I decided I would have one taco and L. went with three. We started with four pork tacos. The other options were beef or veggie. Several friends have let me know all the crazy meat they have tried at this place including rabbit, tongue and goat as well as all the creative veggie options including cabbage and tvp. What I have yet to try are the fish tacos, I need to land down there when this happens.

The place is small and the stove and pots they cook in are visible from the street. I do like the simplicity and home style feel of the business and the two guys working were really nice.

Four pork tacos:
The tacos are small, but I think for $2, you get what you pay for. I liked the pork, it was tender and the quality of meat was a surprise. The tacos are simple, just a bit of onion, cilantro and meat. They needed hot sauce which was not a bad thing, because they make that too. The HOT sauce was bomb it tasted like a hot chili sauce. It has the perfect amount of heat that I prefer. Next time, I will try the green sauce.

After eating his three tacos, L. opted for two more. While we waited outside I realized this would be a hard place to eat at when the weather changes since barely 6 people fit inside.

broadway's salsa verde is so bomb

{click to enlarge}

gosh i love tacos guaymas! my favorite outpost is in fremont, but on those days when i don't want to make that trek 'cross town, the broadway installation does the trick.

just check out the amazing interior decor...the space is pretty industrial with a 20ft-ish ceiling, but they make it a little more inviting with faux foliage, anatomically-exaggerated murals, and insanely bright, sponged walls.

one selling point for all guaymas's is the salsa bar. they have salsas rojas of varying heat intensities, salsa verde (bomb), chipotle salsa, pickled jalapenos/onions/carrots, pico de gallo, and avocado sauce. m always orders the chips, but it's really not necessary. they are usually the element that push my fullness-factor over the edge.

m. got a single carnitas taco filled with cubed carnitas, chopped tomato, and onion...pretty standard and always enjoyable.

he also went for the tortilla soup; a bit out of the norm for this diner, but it was chilly outside. he usually orders chips and salsa, ceviche de pescado, and two tacos (carnitas and/or pescado). he said that the broth was quite "flavorful," aka salty. i was curious, so i sipped a spoonful...it was indeed salty, but it was really the strong flavor of animal that threw me off. the bowl was also the size of a halved NBA-regulation basketball, so m had to do some deep sea diving to salvage the last remains of chicken shreds and cheese.

a. ordered the wet chicken burrito...he went in thinking that he would get chicken enchiladas, but neighboring diners had burritos, and he ran with that inspiration. it looked great. meaty. cheesy. delicious. enormous. perfect to wash down with a negra modelo.

i'm nothing, if not consistent. i always get the chile relleno...it's just so perfect: poblano stuffed with cheese, dipped in a fluffy egg batter, then flash-fried until the cheese is molten lava. the last time i ate at broadway guaymas, the relleno wasn't hot enough, hence the cheese was more like playdough, and there wasn't enough red sauce. this time, the sauce was plentiful, and the relleno was hot. my only hangup was that the cheese wasn't hot and leaky enough....i think their oil was perhaps too hot, so the exterior was browned to perfection and the chile was hot, but the cheese just didn't have enough time to tranform into that tasty magma.

this little video is bizarre, but it was one of the first things that came up when i googled "tacos guaymas." enjoy: a day @ tacos guaymas. i don't know what would possess this man to eat so many burritos, but it is impressive.

What time is it...?

(click any picture to enlarge for texture)

I usually find the mall food court a desolate place, especially for pescatarian options, except for the top floor at Westlake (they have so many tasty cuisines!). However, I wasn't at Westlake, White Pepper and I were trolling for sweet jewels at Northgate. I was at a loss, until I realized they have my beloved Taco Time, which offers a fish taco meal (full int'l menu here).

For $5.69 my self-busing tray included a medium lemonade, hearty fish taco, condiments on request, and a box of mexi-fries/tots/(racist term for mexicans which rhymes with "wiener") bites.

Condiments are key here. They ask if you want "hot sauce" at the register, but you must request the jalapenos, which are bomb, btw, because they are lightly pickled yet crisp. Delicious when combined one-for-one with tots. The hot sauce is pretty wack. White Pep best described it as "tomato water mixed with some sort of cornstarch or other thickening agent." Basically it tastes like nothing, but I'm compelled to ask for doubles and basically eat it dripping off of every tot.

Damn the tots were really good this time around: hot, crisp, salty. I couldn't ask for more.

Lastly, the taco itself. The "white fish" was piping hot, and the light breading was crispy. Taco innards consist of fish fillet, an assortment of chopped vegetables, cabbage, and some unidentifiable creamy, ranchy dressing. Nearly everything was on point. My only hang up is the salad that's stuffed inside. Chopped tomatoes, red and green (hollagang!) bell peppers, red onion...I'm down with all of these, but celery?? No thanks! Luckily there wasn't much in this taco, but I've had others that had big chunks of celery in them. Wtf, am I taking crazy pills? I don't want the distinct flavor of celery overtaking my otherwise pleasant fish taco.

Thanks for lunch, Taco Time! I enjoy your consistent turnout of cheap eats.
